What Is Renters Insurance
from: Keith Mallinson MallinsonMany people do not fully understand the concept of renters insurance
but just consider how many times you actually rent equipment like a
car, motor home, house or even a boat. The purpose of rental insurance
is to cover the replacement costs incurred should damage or loss be
experienced for something you are renting, even if it is an apartment
or house.
Now many people believe that when they rent a property that they are
automatically covered on the insurance of the landlord. Although the
landlord will carry insurance, which he must by law, the only
requirement is for it to cover the building structure in the vent of
fire or damage for example.
Liability and personal belongings and any furniture or equipment is
not covered so this will have to be bought out of savings or not
replaced at all. Tenants are also responsible for the condition of the
property so if they cause a fire or flooding then they will have to pay
this cost as well.
Whilst damage to a property is one reason to have rental insurance,
there is another equally important reason. If an accident or injury
occurs inside the property you are renting that requires medical
attention then any costs involved will be the responsibility of the
renter. A worst case scenario is where the person might even take you
to court so by having renters insurance, not only would medical
expenses be covered but also the cost of the attorney and any other
expenses claimed.
The same situation applies when you rent a car; if your own auto
insurance does not cover the costs, then check to see if your credit
card has a facility to pay for it otherwise you will need to arrange
this separately. If you aren't covered under your own insurance or
credit card then you could consider purchasing the collision damage
waiver as it is a better option to pay about 7 to 13 dollars a day than
10,000 to 30,000 dollars to replace the rental car.
Of course there are many more areas where rental insurance can be
used even if you are renting sports equipment for a vacation. This is
not the type of insurance that should be dismissed without thought as
it will bring a great deal of peace of mind when you collect that one
hundred thousand dollar motor home you are having for a week. How much
you will pay will depend on many factors as with all types of insurance
but you can guarantee that certain factors like location, company you
decide to use and what your deductible is will all be relevant. Take a
look around before you decide on what company to use and try looking on
the internet as discounts are often found there and adjust the
deductible amount until the insurance premium is within your budget.
